Brentford are anxiously awaiting further details on Igor Thiago’s knee injury, which could affect their plans to sell Ivan Toney.
The 23-year-old striker, who joined Brentford this month for £30 million from Club Brugge, was brought in as a potential replacement for Toney. However, Thiago suffered a meniscus injury during Brentford’s 5-2 victory over Wimbledon on Saturday, even though he managed to score twice.
Thiago is set to undergo additional scans next week to assess the severity of the injury. Meniscus injuries can range in severity, with minor cases sidelining a player for four to eight weeks, while more serious tears could result in a four to six-month recovery period.
Should the scans indicate a severe injury, this could impact Brentford’s decision regarding Toney. The 28-year-old England forward, who recently played in the Euro 2024 final, has less than a year left on his contract with Brentford and is keen to move to a higher-profile club. Brentford had been considering selling him during this transfer window to avoid losing him for free in June.
However, if Thiago’s injury turns out to be significant, Brentford may face a dilemma, as they would be left without a natural No. 9.
