In a recent update on Monday, 18th March 2024, the Metropolitan Police revealed a substantial breakthrough in their investigation into two separate crossbow attacks in London. A 47-year-old man was apprehended on suspicion of attempted murder as part of an intelligence-led operation conducted in Shoreditch, east London, around 11 pm on Sunday. This arrest marked a significant milestone in an investigation characterized as “complex and ongoing” by authorities.
The incidents in question occurred earlier this month in Shoreditch, prompting heightened concerns within the community. The first attack targeted a 44-year-old woman who was struck in the head with a crossbow bolt near Clifton House on 4th March. The second incident involved a 20-year-old man sustaining a neck injury from a crossbow bolt near Arnold Circus on 14th March. The subsequent search led to the recent arrest and subsequent discoveries during a search of the suspect’s premises, including a crossbow, knives, and other weapons.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway acknowledged the community’s apprehension following the attacks and praised the immediate and dynamic police response. He emphasized the collaborative effort involving extensive CCTV trawls, intelligence operations, and forensic examinations led by detectives.
Additionally, neighbourhood teams conducted public appeals and reassurance patrols, with notable support from partners, especially the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
Despite the arrest being a significant breakthrough, Conway stressed the ongoing complexity of the investigation. He expressed gratitude for the invaluable support received from the local community and urged anyone with information to come forward promptly.
In light of these developments, the police announced the deployment of enhanced officer numbers to ensure public safety.
