More than 30 agencies sign “climate conflict” pledge in support of Extinction Rebellion

A range of agencies from around the world have signed up for Creative Climate Disclosure – a pledge to report the percentage of their turnover from high carbon-emission clients by the end of 2019.

As a response to climate action group Extinction Rebellion’s (XR) call for advertising and marketing agencies to “declare a climate & ecological emergency”, Futerra – who describe themselves as a “change agency” – launched the initiative.

As of July 10th, 31 agencies have signed up to declare, while adhering to confidentiality agreements, the percentage of turnover by industry, including income from fossil fuel companies and other clients with high carbon emissions. The agencies who have agreed to take part hail from across marketing, PR, advertising and communications.

A campaign spokesperson said on July 9th that the combined turnover of those who had made the pledge by that point came to around £70 million a year. They are hoping ultimately to reach at least 50 signatories.

Individuals have also been encouraged to sign a separate pledge, which states that no matter which agency they work for they will reject fossil fuel briefs altogether.

The website‘s mission statement ends with “Thanks for the nudge, XR.”

Ahead of releasing the list, the invitations to sign up went only to the UK’s BCorp certified agencies. As of now, other agencies are invited to sign the pledge.

In June, Extinction Rebellion disrupted the Cannes Festival of Creativity, protesting publicly on the private beachfront and on the red carpet at the Lions Awards. Apparently 14 protestors were arrested.
