The Modern Milkman

March 2, 2024

The Modern Milkman began life in 2018; with only five years of trade under their belt, they are still a relatively new business, but their innovative ideas and concepts have seen them gain traction rapidly, and they are making quite the name for themselves.

The concept is to sustainably provide excellent products, such as milk, eggs, and juices.

How It Works

Their Drink offerings exclusively feature returnable glass bottles, meticulously collected, washed, and reused in a commitment to sustainability. Additionally, household products are delivered in reusable glass refills, while tea and coffee come in returnable metal caddies. Any packaging that falls outside the realm of reusability is guaranteed to be plastic-free, recyclable, or suitable for home composting, extending their dedication to environmentally conscious practices, even down to the composition of their teabags.

Customers can participate in the milk delivery service by signing up on their website or app, ensuring convenient and routine doorstep deliveries and collections, available up to three times a week. To get started, all one has to do is establish at least one repeat order and choose a preferred delivery day. The flexibility of the service allows customers to modify their orders at any time without a mandatory commitment. Additionally, it offers the option to pause deliveries when one is away temporarily.

Customers have the convenience of overseeing their orders through the app or website, with the flexibility to make adjustments at any hour, day or night. Items can be added or removed from orders until 8 pm on the evening preceding the scheduled delivery days, ensuring timely and efficient delivery first thing in the morning.

Their website’s mission statement encapsulates The Modern Milkman’s dedication to sustainable production.

“Our beautiful planet sits at the heart of everything we do. And when it comes to working on our sustainability credentials, we’re like a puppy with the zoomies. We just don’t stop. As part of our carbon reduction plans, we’re looking to add to the two electric vehicles already on our milkround. But due to the lack of charging infrastructure around our hubs, this is not an easy transition”.

“As a young business, we’re doing as much as we can, as quickly as we can, and this is definitely on our roadmap. We always aim to source plastic-free products, but this can be tricky in areas such as our household range, where we’re yet to find an alternative to reusable plastic bottle tops. If there’s no return and reuse solution with a product, we use home compostable packaging because, while technically made of plastic, this is not derived from fossil fuels and will break down into 100% organic matter without any harmful residue. No one said it’d be easy, but the environmental rewards far outweigh the effort”.

The Modern Milkman’s dedication to being environmentally conscious and providing a quality product is something to be admired. With people becoming more aware of the environment, especially the younger generation, it’s no wonder they have managed to find such great success in such a short amount of time.
