Tottenham Hotspur has always been a funny old team to support. Spurs always seem to flatter to deceive and Monday night’s game was very much an example of this. As we take a look into Monday night’s fixture and give you the latest sports analysis, we will see if we can shed some light on what went right and what went wrong for Tottenham Hotspur in their first game of the season against Leicester City.
A Fantastic First Half
Spurs were all over The Foxes in the first period, they had chance after chance and pretty much had the opposition camped in their half. Leicester didn’t register a shot on target in the first half and new boy Dominic Solanke has a couple of chances. On a free header, he should have stuck in the back of the net. Solanke came for the big price tag and is Tottenham Hotspur’s record signing so fans will be hoping he hits the ground running sooner rather than later. This game showed that Spurs need someone who can stick the ball in the back of the net, but fans with a steady head on their shoulders will also realise he will need a little time to bed into the squad so a little bit of patience may be key here.
Spurs finally took the lead after a fantastic ball into the box from James Maddison was headed into the bottom right corner by Pedro Porro. Maddison ran the show in the first half and created many chances that Spurs really should have put away. They went into the break leading one nil, but it really should have been 3 or 4 by halftime.
A Sloppy Second Showing
Spurs did start brightly again in the second half and for the first fifteen minutes looked like the only side that could score. Rodrigo Bentacur really should have made it two and Solanke had another chance that he fired straight at the goalkeeper who really should have done more to test the Leicester shot-stopper.
Things started to unravel after this as the home side started to grow into the game and their talisman Jamie Vardy levelled the score in the fifty-seventh minute. It was a soft goal to concede as no one picked up the veteran in the box and he was free to head home from close range. After this Vardy had yet another chance but Spurs goalkeeper Vicario made a fantastic save to keep the game level.
Tottenham did manage to work themselves into the game and in the last part of the game they again asserted their dominance, it was too little too late tough as they couldn’t find a winner. To make things worse Bentancur was also stretchered off the field with a nasty head injury, but he was seen to be up and about after the game and talking to his fellow teammates. he may well miss a few games though due to concussion protocols.
All in all, it was an all too familiar story from Spurs. Just like last season they controlled large portions of the game but failed to kill the game off, and this ultimately led to them dropping points.
